Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a compassionate and transformative approach to therapy that recognizes something many people already sense internally — that we all have different “parts” within us.
You might notice:
• A part of you that is highly self-critical
• A part that feels anxious or overwhelmed
• A part that tries to stay in control
• A part that wants connection but fears being hurt
• A part that feels stuck in old pain
Rather than trying to eliminate these parts, IFS helps us understand them. Each part developed for a reason — often to protect us from pain or help us survive difficult experiences. Even parts that create challenges in the present are usually trying to help in the only ways they know how.
IFS therapy helps clients develop curiosity and compassion toward these parts, allowing deeper healing to occur.
At the center of IFS is what the model calls the Self — the calm, compassionate core of who you are. As therapy progresses, many clients find they are able to lead their internal system from this place of greater wisdom and steadiness. Instead of feeling controlled by different reactions or emotions, people begin to feel more integrated, more grounded, and more fully themselves.
At Be Restored Counseling, we often integrate IFS with trauma-informed approaches, mindfulness, and somatic work to support deep and lasting healing. When we learn to listen to the parts of ourselves with compassion, transformation becomes possible.
